IMS 440 - Senior Capstone
Fall 2024
Concept and Inspiration
For my final project in my senior capstone class, I created Derezzed, a one-minute projection mapping piece designed for the  dome of Kumler Chapel located at Miami University. The guidelines for the project required that it incorporate the chapel's dome, include music, and last one minute. Drawing inspiration from one of my favorite scenes in TRON: Legacy—the arena scene featuring glowing, dynamic discs on the ceiling—I aimed to recreate the same futuristic atmosphere. The dome's circular structure provided the perfect canvas to echo the iconic visual style of TRON.
To complement the visual design, I chose Daft Punk’s track Derezzed from the TRON: Legacy soundtrack. Its electronic beats and high-energy rhythm aligned perfectly with the aesthetic and movement I envisioned.
Planning and Development
The project began with a concept document, where I detailed my vision for the piece. I presented my ideas to peers, gathering feedback to refine the project direction. This planning stage was crucial for translating my initial inspiration into a feasible design tailored to the constraints and possibilities of projection mapping in the chapel.
I decided to use TouchDesigner as my primary tool for this project. Having previously explored TRON-themed work in a motion design class, I wanted to push the boundaries of that concept by incorporating interactivity and dynamic elements. The project evolved to include features like audio reactivity, rotation, color transitions, and zoom effects, all synchronized with the progression of the music.

FINAL RENDER
Execution and Final Projection
The final piece transformed Kumler Chapel’s dome into a futuristic arena of light and motion. As the music played, the projected visuals rotated, changed colors, and expanded in sync with the beats of Derezzed. The circular patterns of the discs highlighted the dome’s architecture, creating an immersive experience for viewers.
This project was a culmination of my skills in motion design and projection mapping. It challenged me to merge technical expertise with artistic vision, resulting in a dynamic and engaging piece that honored the spirit of TRON while leveraging the unique qualities of Kumler Chapel’s dome.
